Preparing for my departure for Spain has been an adventure in and of itself. Spain is far from the United States and has a unique culture. Consequently, I must learn to embrace the differences between the two countries in order to have a fulfilling experience abroad.
For example, I will meet my Spanish host family during my first week in Spain. I’ve never met my family, and I’d like to give a good first impression. My wish causes me to consider several questions. How do I meet someone who has agreed to take care of me for six weeks? Are gifts expected from los hijos/estudiantes de Estados Unidos? If not, would it be considered polite to bring one anyway? I e-mailed Prof. Lopez and was told that a gift is not required but may lesson the initial tension between us and our host families. If we bring a gift, it should be small and inexpensive. Gifts can, however, be bought before we meet out families in Alcalá de Henares (such as cookies and small cakes).
Hopefully, the gift will act as a small “thank you” for welcoming me to Spain. :)
